Moving to Los Angeles Checklist
Two deadlines, one requirement with no deadline, and nothing due before you arrive. Tell the DMV your new address within 10 days. Register an out-of-state vehicle within 20 days. Apply for a California driver's license if you intend to live here and drive, which the DMV requires without stating a period.
Both clocks run from the day you became a California resident. You are a California resident if you intend to live in the state for six months or more in one year.
Renting is not a state matter. What applies depends on the city, and the address check on the moving guide settles which one.
Build your own checklist
Four answers and this dates every deadline California sets, counts them from the day you become a resident, and leaves out the steps that are not yours. Where the DMV states no period there is no date.
Before you move
California asks nothing of you before you arrive.
No deadline stated
Work out the day you become a California resident. Both clocks below run from it, not from the day the truck arrives.

No deadline stated
Pack what the driver's license application needs. The list is below, and the identity document has to match your current name.

Your first week
Two things, and only one of them has a deadline the DMV states.
10 days from the day you change address
Tell the DMV your new address. It can be done online.
DMV, Updating information on your driver's license or ID card, read 2026-10-30
No deadline stated
Apply for a California driver's license. Required if you intend to live here and drive.

Many sources say a new resident has ten days to get a California license. We could not find that deadline on the DMV's own new-resident or driver-license pages, read on 2026-10-30, so this page states the requirement and no period. Ask the DMV if the timing matters to you.
The DMV asks for up to 3 days to process a change of address, so silence is not a failure. A PO box may be used as a mailing address, but a residence address is required when the change of address covers a driver's license or ID card. Temporary mailing addresses are not allowed.
By day 20
An out-of-state vehicle has to be registered here within 20 days.
20 days from becoming a resident or bringing the vehicle in, whichever applies
Register a vehicle you brought in that was registered in another state or country.
DMV, New to California, read 2026-10-30
The clock runs from whichever came first, so shipping the car three months after you moved does not start a fresh one.
Late registration carries a penalty that grows the longer it goes unpaid. The amount is on the DMV's registration fees page and is not copied here, because a fee schedule moves and a figure quoted from a guide is the one that is out of date.
The DMV publishes no document list for an out-of-state vehicle on any page we could open, so this page prints none. Call the DMV before the appointment.
After that
Who supplies water and power turns on the address, not on the state.
No deadline stated
Set up water and power. In the City of Los Angeles that is the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. Anywhere else it is another provider, and this guide names none.

What to bring for the license
The DMV's own list, for somebody holding a license from another state or another country.
- A completed Driver's License or Identification (DL/ID) card application, which can be started online.
- Your social security number.
- An acceptable identity document, original or certified copy, with your current name matching it.
- Acceptable residency documents, if you have never held a California DL or ID card.
- The nonrefundable application fee.
- A thumbprint scan, a vision exam and a photo, taken at the office.
- The knowledge test, which you have three attempts to pass.
California DMV, Driver licenses, read 2026-10-30. The application can be started online and finished at an office, and the fee is valid for 12 months.
The date everything runs from
Every deadline above counts from the day you became a California resident. More than one of the DMV's tests can be true at once. Take the earliest.
Not sure which applies to you? The DMV decides the question. A date later than the real one moves every deadline with it.

How current this page is

Confirmed
- California's own deadlines, read off the DMV's pages on 2026-10-30: 20 days to register a vehicle brought in from another state, and 10 days to tell the DMV about a change of address.
- The DMV's own test for when somebody becomes a California resident, which is the event the other deadlines run from.
- Which Los Angeles an address is in, from the City of Los Angeles's own boundary layer, for any address the city's address index can place.
- Which city an address outside Los Angeles is in, or that it is unincorporated county land, from the US Census Bureau's place boundaries. Wired up on 2026-10-30 and checked against thirteen live points that day.
What this page cannot tell you yet
- The DMV states no deadline for a new resident to get a California driver's license on either its new-resident page or its driver-license page. The ten days widely quoted elsewhere is not on those pages, so this guide states the requirement and no period.
- Unincorporated county land that the Census has given no place name of its own. The check says it is unincorporated Los Angeles County and goes no finer, because there is no name to give it.
- Who supplies water and power outside the City of Los Angeles. No provider is named for any other city until there is a sourced map of them.
What changed
- : Written. The address check and the state checklist, from the DMV's own pages.
- : The check now names the city an address outside Los Angeles is in, or says it is unincorporated county land, instead of naming both possibilities.
- : The checklist's steps became a timeline with the deadline first, and the deposit section's three figures became a strip. No figure changed.
- : The checklist page gained a form that dates these deadlines from your own move-in date, emails them with a calendar file, and can remind you before each one. Every period it uses is the same constant this page prints, and the driver's license still gets no date.
